Honor Your Mother

 Guest Blog by Gary Riedel

S - SCRIPTURE: Exodus 20:12 Honor your father and your mother that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.

O - OBSERVATION:This sounds like really good advice, with a promise tacked on to it, but it’s much, much more than that. This is a Commandment from Almighty God, given to Moses on Mount Sinai only 5 chapters after God had allowed Israel to cross the Red Sea on dry land and when the Egyptian’s tried to follow to bring them back into captivity, God allowed the sea to close and drown every horse and soldier of the Egyptian Army except Pharaoh who watched in utter disbelief. While these commands seem difficult, God gave them to us not so He could say; aha, I caught you, but rather as loving guidelines to help His people live a satisfying life of love and service to Him. This particular commandment is a basic foundation of a happy home, learning to honor our parents is also a great start in learning how to function in our society for Christians are taught to also be subject to authority, Romans 13. Why is that? Because all power comes from God, Romans 13. Being subject to authority is being subject to God!

A- APPLICATION: Well I remember a few times when I tried to rebel against my parents authority and I soon learned that was not at all a good idea, and if I dared to sass my mom in front of my dad, well I only did it once, dad took care of that without delay! You see, honor
means respect as well as obedience. Why honor your mother? God says so, decency should also tell you that, she is the one who carried you and gave you life. She invested her all in you, and she loves you unconditionally. It has been said that a mother’s love for her child is closer to the love God has for us than any other love. I’m confident that is true. God’s love is still greater because mother’s are human, but there is no other love from an earthly being that is greater than a mother’s love!

So, if your mother is alive, call her today, or if you can, make it a point to see her today, after all, if you’re happy to be alive, you have her tender nourishment to thank.

P - PRAYER: Gracious Father, we thank You for the mother’s who gave us life, who nourished us with food, manners, clean clothes, and the precious Word of God. Lord, give this sinful world Godly mother’s and father’s to turn this culture to You!
In Jesus Name, Amen
