God's Will - A great plan for us

S - Scripture
Matthew  6 v. 10  Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven.

O - Observation
Thy will be done. What is God's will? We know that God wants Everyone to be saved. We know that God wants us to be in a relationship with him. We know that God wants us to bless his children. We know that God wants us to live in Love and Unity. Hmmmm.... If the world achieved that, it would be like... Heaven.

A - Application
So... Am I helping or hindering God's will? What areas do I need some divine help on to complete God's will?

P - Prayer
Jesus, Use me as a tool to accomplish your will while I am on Earth.  Love Will

Pray Then Like This

Pray Then Like This

Scripture: Matthew 6:9-15, “Pray then like this: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.”
Observations: Today’s scripture is familiar to us all. Perhaps it is too familiar. I say this because it is very easy to speak the words while our minds are elsewhere. If Jesus is telling his disciples (and us) to “pray then like this,” then we should study this prayer carefully.
Christ’s instruction on prayer is part of the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7). The focus of the Lord’s Prayer is first on God and his kingdom; then on us and our needs. This principle is also displayed in Matthew 6:33 where Jesus instructs us to “seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” Luther’s Small Catechism divides the Lord’s Prayer into an introduction followed by seven petitions. Let’s briefly consider what each of these divisions say.
In the introduction we address God as, “Our Father in heaven.” First, we see that it’s our Father. By “our,” we acknowledge that we are members of the body of Christ; not “lone rangers.” Jesus could have instructed us to address the Father as Almighty God or some other lofty title but instead instructs us to address his Father as our Father and to come before his Father as dear children.
In the first petition we pray, “hallowed be your name.” God’s name is holy (set apart) and we are to treat it with reverence. God revealed his special, personal name to Moses (and to us) at the burning bush (Exodus 3:14-15). God told Moses to remove his shoes because he was standing on holy ground. God’s personal name means “I AM” or I AM WHO I AM.” In the introduction we see the intimacy of God as Father and in the first petition the transcendent holiness of God as the great I AM.
In the second petition we pray, “Your kingdom come.” Romans 14:17 tells us the Kingdom of God is “righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.” Righteousness (right standing with God) is imparted to us by grace through faith in Jesus. It is not something we are able to earn. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus describes what the kingdom looks like as his followers are salt and light to the world. We pray God’s kingdom will come to all who live in this world.
In the third petition we pray, “your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” This is difficult for some to pray because they feel that they know the preferred outcome and may not fully trust God if his direction is different. Yet God’s understanding is unsearchable and his ways inscrutable (Isaiah 40:28; Romans 11:33). His good and gracious will is done whether we ask for it or not. Prayer for God’s will to be done reminds us that we are his servants and not vice versa. The heartfelt sincerity of our prayer serves to gauge our level of trust in him.
In the fourth petition we pray, “Give us this day our daily bread.” Whether your tastes lean toward whole grain wheat or Wonder white, we intuitively recognize that this petition refers to more than a baked fermented mixture of flour and water. We ask God to provide this day all that we need for our bodies and lives. People have a tendency to worry about the future. This petition reminds us to take one day at a time; be thankful for what we have today, and trust God for tomorrow. In a parallel interpretation, Jesus said, “I am the bread of life” (John 6:35). Jesus is the “bread that came down from heaven” (John 6:51). He was born in Bethlehem which means “house of bread.” We all need more of Jesus every day of our lives.
In the fifth petition we pray, “and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.” This is difficult for some to pray because they have suffered terrible wrongdoing at some point and carry hatred and unforgiveness in their hearts for the perpetrator(s). Jesus offers no exceptions to this rule. In fact, he underscores its importance in verses 14 and 15 by declaring plainly, “if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.” “We love because he first loved us” (1 John 4:19). As we have received grace, we are to show grace to others. If you struggle with unforgiveness, there is hope. Contact Pastor Tim or an elder for help.
In the sixth petition we pray, “And lead us not into temptation.” God temps no one to sin. He does however test our faith to develop our “steadfastness” (James 1:2-3). He is able to keep us from stumbling when we are tempted by the devil, the world, or our own sinful nature (Jude 1:24).
In the seventh petition we pray, “but deliver us from evil.” Our spiritual enemies will attempt to lure us away from God and his ways. We ask God to deliver us from evil (or the evil one) so that we would not be led away from God nor be harmed by the devil.
Application: Am I actually praying the Lord’s Prayer or am I just saying the words?
Prayer: Let’s pray:
Dear Father in Heaven, thank you for sending your dear son, Jesus, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world, to suffer and die in our place that we might walk in right standing with you. Thank you that Jesus taught us how to pray. Help us to pray the Lord’s Prayer; not just say the Lord’s Prayer. In Jesus Name we ask. Amen.

Talk to God

S - Scripture
Matthew    6 v. 8b For your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

O - Observation
Why bother? If God already knows what we need then why ask? It's because God wants a relationship with us. He wants us to talk to him. He wants us to share our lives with him. After all, He states, seek and ye shall find, ask and it will be given to you, knock and the door will be opened. One last thing, if your ever at a point where your at a lost for words, the Holy Spirit intercedes for us, talks to God on our behalf. Now that is comforting.

A - Application
Am I developing a Relationship with God? Do I really believe that he is listening?

P - Prayer
Jesus, Help me to develop a Strong Relationship with you. Help me to talk to you with confidence. Love Will.

Check your motivation

S - Scripture
Matthew    6 v. 1  Beware of practicing your piety before men in order to be seen by them; for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.

O - Observation
This is Jesus's direct comments to the Holy Rollers. Those who show everyone how great a Christian they are.
Not only does this sort of behavior get No Love from Jesus, but it also can turn other people off. Which is exactly opposite of what God wants. God wants a relationship not a religion. 1 Samuel 16 v7b. For the Lord looks not as a man sees; man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord look on the Heart.

A - Application
What are my motivations when I do acts of service for God? Are they pure or self driven?

P - Prayer
Jesus, Help me to keep my acts of service just that. Acts of Service for you. Love Will

Let it go!

S - Scripture
Matthew   5 v. 45  So that you may be sons of your Father who is in Heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and unjust.

O - Observation
Revenge. People say, Revenge is ours. Not so. Not for us sons and daughters of God. Remember, our time here on Earth is short. Therefore this verse is all the more applicable, Romans 12 v. 19 "Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the Wrath of God, for it is written, revenge is mine, I will repay says the Lord." Knowing this, and that we are his children, and he is a just God, we can let the sun and rain, rise and fall on the unjust without it eating us up!

A - Application
Am I able to let go? Am I able to let God Judge for me?

P - Prayer
Jesus, Help me to stay focused on you. Love

Go the Distance!

S - Scripture
Matthew   5 v. 41 And if anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles.

O - Observation
This is Jesus' prescription for persecution, and its not for me, but the persecutor. Remember, we have a higher calling.  We are Children of God.  We have an inheritance better than we can imagine. With this confidence we recognize that our time here on earth is short, and since God wants all to be saved, we need to take a different, Godly approach to persecution. These are our opportunities to live our faith, and nothing is worse to the persecutors. Proverbs 25 v.21-22 "If your enemy is hungry or thirsty, give him something to eat and drink, for you will heap coals of fire on his head." When in pain, people are open to the good news.

A - Application
Am I going the distance - and back with those that are my enemies?

P - Prayer
Jesus, Give me the power to walk the two miles with all of those that persecute me. Love

It's about your Heart work!

S - Scripture
Matthew   5 v. 29  But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

O - Observation
This is Jesus' clarification of the 6th commandment, "You shall not commit Adultery." Jesus ratchets it up a notch, by not only saying what you do, but what you think. This insight can easily be applied to the other commandments. In the end, its all about the heart work. Jesus knew this, he says in Matthew 15 v. 18 But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles, (I'll add defines) a man. Praise be to God that Jesus came to fulfill the law, especially given his clarification for you. Impressive. Glorious!!!

A - Application
How's my Heart work?

P - Prayer
Jesus,   Give me clean hands, give me a pure heart!!  Love Will.

Reflect on the Importance of Jesus Life

S - Scripture
Matthew   5 v.  17  Think not that I have come to abolish the law and the prophets; I have come not to abolish them but to fulfill them.
O - Observation
This is great insight into Jesus mission on earth. Its one we tend to gloss over the Biggie, dying on the cross AND RISING for our sins. But also, day in and day out, Jesus came to lead a perfect life. They say character is what you do when no ones around. Such was the case when Jesus was on earth. He was perfect. He was perfect for our sake. By him being perfect and blameless, truly set him up to be the atoning sacrifice. In the old days, God didn't just want any old sheep. No he wanted them to sacrifice a spotless sheep. Such as it was for Jesus.

A - Application
As I struggle with my sin, do I pause to give thanks to Jesus for being Perfect?

P - Prayer
Jesus,  Thank you for being blameless and fulfilling the Law for my sake. Love Will.

Let your Light Shine!!!

May 24, 2020
Guest Blogger Dwight Enfield

Scripture: Matthew 5:14-16 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.
15 Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”

Eugene Peterson’s paraphrase “The Message” translates Matthew 5:14-16 this way, “You're here to 15 If I make you light-bearers, you don't think I'm going to hide you under a bucket, do you? I'm putting you on a light stand. 16Now that I've put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand—shine! Keep open house; be generous with your lives. By opening up to others, you'll prompt people to open up with God, this generous Father in heaven.
be light, bringing out the God-colors in the world. God is not a secret to be kept. We're going public with this, as public as a city on a hill.

Observation: It is all but impossible to read these verses taken from Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount without the mission statement of AIC coming to mind. In our mission statement we say in one voice, that the mission of the people God gathers together (in person or in spirit) at AIC is to make disciples for Jesus Christ. Clearly that can only be done as God makes us “light-bearers” and as he places us on a hilltop to shine! The critical question before us is how will we respond to God’s call on our lives? It is all too easy to believe that we are not prepared to witness to a dark and dying world. However, the Scripture rejects this idea out-of-hand. Paul was inspired to write that, “We are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them (Ephesians 2:10).” Do you see it? Do you see how our belief that we are inadequate and that the mission is too hard or too unclear is eliminated? Look again at Paul’s statement. Who prepared the good works? When did God prepare the good works? What is our part in the mission? To me the text is clear. We have no excuse for failing to be in mission. After all, God prepared the mission and the mission field for us even before we entered it! Our role is to simply walk in the good works. God will do the good works he prepared to bless us in!

Application: Now that we know God prepares and does the good works that he calls us to walk in what should we expect? I believe we should expect exactly what God’s Word commands of us. Acts 1:6-11 provides for us our application of the command for us to be the light of the world. “So when they had come together, they asked him, ‘Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?’ 7 He said to them, ‘It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” 9 And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. 10 And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, 11 and said, ‘Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.’” Did you notice how Jesus redirects the disciples from their question about when they would be blessed by the restoration of the kingdom of Israel to commanding them to be a blessing to others? We also feel in Acts 1:10 an urgency. The context of this passage is the Ascension of Jesus. The angels, in essence, tell the disciple don’t just stand there dumb-struck, Go! And that of course brings to mind the Great Commission, “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age (Matthew 28:19-20).”

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for creating me for mission. Thank you for placing me together with a people gathered who desire to be in mission. Thank you for preparing a mission for us. Thank you for preparing the mission you desire us to walk in before we take the first step. Prevent us from placing our mission and your light under a cover. Soli Deo Gloria!

Be the Salt of the Earth

S - Scripture
Matthew   5 v. 13a  You are the salt of the earth.

O - Observation
Salt has two main purposes. 1st its a preservative. It saves food. WE as Salt of the earth must be about saving people's souls. Just as we hate to throw away good food, so God hates to have people go to Hell. See 2 Peter 3 v. 9 (The Lord) not wishing ANYONE to Perish. Also, salt adds flavor. It makes the bland taste better. So it should be with us. We may be in bland situations, but what we say or do can add flavor. See Colossians 4 v. 6 "Let your speak always be gracious, seasoned with SALT, so that you may know how you ought to answer everyone. "

A - Application
Am I being salty?  Am I more of a preservative or a favorer?

P - Prayer
Jesus, Help me to be SALTY for your sake. Love Will.

Be Merciful!

S - Scripture
Matthew   5 v. 7  Blessed are the merciful, for they shall have Mercy.

O - Observation
Merciful. That's exactly opposite of our culture today. We like to win, and win big,  We want to crush our competition. WE are blessed to live in America and be rich (Uhhh... last I checked, college is not cheap!) It in essence is a position of power and authority, we are privileged. How we handle this status is key with the people that we interact with. Jesus gives us some great instruction. See Matthew 25 v.34-40, "I was hungry, thirsty, naked, in prison, and you took care of me. But when? When you helped the least of these you did it to me. Come inherit the Kingdom."

A - Application
Do I recognize my status? Do I recognize the opportunity to be merciful?

P - Prayer
Jesus, Give me a mindset and a heart set to be merciful. Love

Be Fisher's of Men

S - Scripture
Matthew  4 v. 19  And he said to them, "Follow me, and I will make you Fishers of Men"

O - Observation
Although Jesus used this as his recruiting line to a set of his disciples, Peter, Andrew, James and John, it is still applicable today. There is no greater calling or purpose in life than to be fishers of men. The cool thing is, you don't have to be a paid professional, pastor, to do this. The disciples were not brought up as priests in the temple, no they were common laborers, fishermen. But, I don't know how!!  Easy. Just follow him. Read the Bible, (go on Mission trips with your Uncle), Jesus will be there to teach you.

A - Application
Am I being made into a Fisher of Men? Am I being taught by reading and studying God's word?

P - Prayer -  Jesus, I will follow. Make me a Fisher of Men.  Love Will

Be there for others!

S - Scripture
Matthew   4  v. 11 Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and ministered to him.

O - Observation
This is a really key verse in our lives. After Jesus went through this very tough trial, no food for 40 days, strong temptations and attacks by the devil, Angels ministered to him. It only makes sense that God's support structure would be angels. They helped to lift him back up. Today, we see people, friends, going through some tough times. What are we to do? Follow God’s lead. Support them. Uplift them. Encourage them with God's word.

A - Application
Am I in tune to other people's struggles? Am I encouraging, supporting them with God's word?

P - Prayer
Jesus,  Help me to lift people up in their time of need.  Love Will.

Worship the right Thing!

S - Scripture
Matthew   4  v.  10 Then Jesus said to him, "Be gone Satan! For it is written, you shall worship the Lord your God and only him shall you serve.

O - Observation
And him only shall you serve. Back in the Old Testament and Jesus' time, there were lots of Gods. Today, the sheer number of stated Gods may be reduced, but Satan has placed a new God that is much more destructive.
Ourselves. Putting ourselves and our agenda first is self worship. Satan knows about the god of selfworhsip  / pride. The last 2 temptation of Jesus were about pride. Show that your God will save you by jumping off a building and bow down to me and I will give you the world. We need to remember Jesus’s words in Matthew 16 v.26,  “For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his life?“

A - Application
Am I serving him only? What are my motivations?

P - Prayer
Jesus,  Let all that I do, in work and play be for your glory. Love Will

Follow God's Lead

S - Scripture
Matthew   4  v. 1  Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the Devil.

O - Observation
There's two key points in this verse. One, being obedient to the Spirit of God. Who knows what he has planned, Although we know God’s intent based upon Jeremiah 29 v. 11, "For I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for Welfare and NOT evil, to give you a future and a hope."  When we don't follow the Spirit we are missing out. Two, following the Spirit might not take you down easy street. Hmmmm....  Fasting for 40 days, being tempted by the Devil. (Doesn't sound to easy to me!) Final thought, Revelations' 2 v. 7b  To him who conquers, I will grant to eat of the tree of life.

A - Application
Am I being obedient / following the Spirit of God?

P - Prayer
Jesus, Give me the courage to follow your lead. Help me to recognize where you lead me.   Love Will.
