Behold Your Mother

Behold Your Mother

Guest Blog by Gary Riedel

 S - SCRIPTURE:
John 19:26,27 When Jesus saw His mother and the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He said to His mother, “Woman, Behold Your son!” 27 Then He said to the disciple, “Behold Your mother!” And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home.

O - OBSERVATION:
So here is Jesus hanging on the cross, barely yet alive, experiencing all the agony our sin brought to bear on Him and He see’s His mother with John, who scripture says was “the disciple whom Jesus loves.” Nothing is said about Jesus earthly father, Joseph, so we assume he is deceased. Nothing is said about the brothers of Jesus, but to the disciple Jesus had a special affection for, he gave the most important earthly task to care for His mother as long as she lived on this earth. From this we gather that His mother was exceedingly important to Him, and to care for her He selected His most trusted and loved disciple. It reminds me of when my father was nearing death, we had several intimate conversations between just the 2 of us. One of the things He told me was that he wasn’t afraid to die, but he hated to leave mom. I took his hand looked him straight in the eye and told him I would make sure she was loved and cared for. He smiled and said thank you. Now he knew that would happen anyway, but it was good for him to hear it.

A - APPLICATION:
All of us have mothers and I’m sure everyone’s relationship is a bit different, but we should always follow the example of Jesus and make sure our mothers are properly loved and cared for, especially when they can no longer care for themselves. In the commandments, God says Honor Your father and your mother that it may go well with you and that you may live long on this earth!

P - PRAYER:
Gracious Father, on this Mother’s Day, please remind us all to always love our mothers as God commands. On this earth Lord, a mothers love is second only to Yours! May we love them the way You first loved us! In Jesus Name, Amen
